The purpose of conducting a citizen's police academy is to give the public a working knowledge and understanding of the Police Department’s policies and procedures and the local criminal justice system, through a series of classes involving instruction by police officers.

Orlando, Florida was the first U.S. city to conduct a citizen's police academy in 1984. It now serves as the prototype for other citizen's police academies across the United States.

We feel that the more information the public has about the Police Department, the more understanding, communication, and trust will exist between the community and the Police Department.
